About the Publick Cup

cupIn 2001, Koffee Too? was established by Lee and Tracy Jackson to offer highest quality coffee and tea beverages at the heart of Yale University and New Haven. It was immediately defined as an essential student study, library break room and downtown meeting place. Over seven years, this coffee shop has brought those who pass through its doors higher education in specialty coffee, tea, pastries and panini.

In 2007, Koffee Too? determined it was time to distinguish itself from the other Koffee stores in New Haven, which are no longer under its ownership. K2? held a contest, open to all, accepting suggestions for a new name. Despite the intelligent: Ivy Bean, the fierce: Skull & Beans, the common: Green Beans, the owners opted for a name they felt best represented this York Street institution: The Publick Cup.

In 1701, Yale was founded as a Collegiate School to educate students "in the Arts and Sciences [to] be fitted for Publick employment both in Church and Civil State." In its 300 years, the University has upheld the vision of the Yale Charter, educating leaders in every sector of life (including four of the last six presidents).

The founders' original spelling "Publick" was chosen to remember roots both in Yale's aim to serve the nation and the world, and in the coffeeshop's aim to energize and educate the public here in New Haven. We have chosen "Cup" to indicate the quality specialty coffee we place in each and every cup, and, in that our commitment to practices which reduce harm to our globe.

One of the best opportunities to serve the Public is to remain mindful of the impact made on the environment. The best practices of the Publick Cup reflect this intention.

The Publick Cup offers some of the best specialty coffee in New Haven. The Cup also offers you a place to meet, to study or discuss what matters in the world and in your life. The owners and staff of the Publick Cup remain committed to that history of excellence in serving you your daily cup.
